A Case to Solve

Vikram was upset on hearing stories about the viciousness of men. Betal told him, "Okay, then let me tell you about a wicked woman."

Once there lived a rich man called Sagardati. He was a widower with a daughter named Mainashri. He was too busy to look after his daughter. So Mainashri began misusing her freedom . She made false promises to
many men.

A man named Shridut loved her in spite of that. She decided
to marry Shridut. However, after marriage she did not take any care of him and spent time with other men.

One night, she quietly slipped out of her house to meet a lover. Meanwhile, a thief had entered her lover's house and killed him. When Mainashri

The wicked Mainashri returned home and blamed Shridut for whatever happened. All her neighbours took pity on her and called the
police. After investigation, the police found the thief and caught him for the murder. When he told them the story about the corpse biting Mainashri's nose, nobody believed him. Shridut was imprisoned for cutting off his wife's nose.

Now Betal asked Vikram, "
How would you have solved the case?" Vikram, who had judged many criminal cases, said, "I would have checked the corpse's mouth, for if it had bitten the nose , portions of flesh would still remain in its mouth."

"Brilliant," said Betal and
disappeared again.

A Father's Love

Betal put forward another puzzle to Vikram. A woman called Leelavati married a thief. After marriage the man decided to quit stealing. However, when they had a son, the man found he had no money to support his family and went back to stealing. After his death, Leelavati married a businessman.

http://www.kidsgen.com/fables_and_fa...r%27s_love.jpg
The businessman loved his family and raised the child well. Just when the boy took charge of the business, his parents died.

While performing their last rites in the river, three hands came out claiming the offering. The boy recognised his mother's voice and offered prayers to her, but he couldn't make out which
pair of hand was his father's. At this point he recalled his mother once mentioning his real father.

Betal
stopped the story here and asked which father was finally given the offering.

"The businessman," replied Vikram. "Because he had showered his love and reared the child, while the thief had only given him birth." Again, Betal flew away.

The people of Vrindavan obeyed Krishna and stopped worshipping Indra. Indra became angry and decided to punish them. He called upon the clouds, which were under his control and asked them to rain continuously over Vrindavan. The people were terrified by the heavy rains and thought that the flood would destroy their village and they would all die. Krishna lifted the Goverdhan entire mountain on the little finger of his left hand. He held the mountain like an umbrella for seven days and seven nights over the people of Vrindavan .

At last, Indra realised his mistake and was ashamed. He asked the clouds to stop
raining and apologised to Krishna.

Andal's Devotion

Like Krishna's gopis, Andal had conquered Vishnu by her love and devotion. Her father was Periaazhvaar, a Vishnu devotee, who found her abandoned at the Srivilliputtur Vishnu temple when http://www.kidsgen.com/fables_and_fa...ages/andal.jpgshe was young. As she grew older, her love for Vishnu deepened. One day Periaazhvaar found her wearing the garlands of the temple's deity. When he asked her, she said, "I am wearing the god's garlands whom I shall marry." Angry, Periaazhvaar made fresh garlands. That night Vishnu appeared in his dream and said that he would only accept the garlands that Andal had worn. While she was being offered, Andal disapeared and merged herself with the idol. Andal is also known as Goda, or Bhuma devi .
