Difficult? http://www.jimloy.com/puzz/difficul.gif 1 . This classic puzzle has been in many books, with different numbers. Our rectangle is inscribed in a quarter circle. Can you figure out the length of the diagonal of the rectangle? I'll give you one minute to solve it. http://www.jimloy.com/puzz/easy.gif 2 . Here is another classic puzzle. On the right I have dissected a square into four identical pieces. And the L-shaped figure has also been dissected into four identical pieces. Can you dissect a square into five identical pieces (of some shape)? http://www.jimloy.com/puzz/diffic0.gif 3. Can you dissect a square into two identical squares? On the left is an attempt. I drew one square (purple) of the correct size, and then tried to arrange the pieces into a second square. This process seems to go on forever. Of course there is a way to perform this dissection. Here is the other diagonal, which is obviously 14 (the radius), and the diagonals of a rectangle are equal. Hm, I wonder why that 7 is backward.
